Three Holiday Trip-Check Tips

Three Holiday Trip-Check Tips

Responsive Brakes

When it comes to cold weather, there are three brake parts that are affected the most: brake fluid, brake booster and vacuum supply hose. Congealed brake fluid, caused by low temperatures, will cause your car to brake slower and create air bubbles in the fluid. If the brakes happen to freeze up entirely, it’s likely caused by condensation in the booster or vacuum supply hose.

Battery Strength

When cars won’t start during the winter, it’s most likely a problem with the battery. Cold weather can diminish your battery’s capacity to hold a charge and battery fluid can freeze. The quickest way to get your car started is to get a jump from another car. However, this problem will most likely continue to happen until the battery is replaced. All batteries die at some point, it’s better to replace it before you get stranded!

Tire Pressure and Tread

As the temperature starts to drop, your tires will lose 1 – 2 pounds of air pressure for every 10 degrees. This leaves your tires flatter than they should be and everything from gas mileage to traction is in jeopardy. Tire tread is also important in inclement weather. Insufficient tread can cause you to lose control of your vehicle when driving on slick roads. To make sure your car is safe to drive, check to see if your tires have at least 1/8 inch of tread.
