5 Car Terms All Lake Worth Drivers Should Learn

| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

Not only are you trying to keep up with the numbers, but you’re also trying to figure out what solutions they’re suggesting and what work your car actually needs. It doesn’t help that the mechanic seems like he’s speaking another language.

That’s why the neighborly, ASE-certified technicians at Christian Brothers Automotive in Lake Worth, TX, want to simplify the process. With knowledge of these 5 car terms, your next conversation with a mechanic won’t be so one-sided.

1. Dipstick

This is a nifty measurement device that our technicians use to determine the level and quality of your motor oil. The dipstick is just a simple metal rod with markings for measurement.

2. Spark Plug

This is a small component located on your engine. You have 1 for every cylinder. The spark plug is responsible for igniting the engine with a small electric charge. If a spark plug burns out, the engine could experience ignition problems.

3. [Battery] Corrosion

Chemical reactions take place between the sulfuric acid in your battery and the metal posts that send out the power. This causes corrosion to build up on the battery. If too much corrosion collects on the posts, it will block any power from leaving the battery.

4. Brake Pad

Brakes use brake pads to apply force on your wheels, making them stop. Brake pads wear down over time and won’t stop the car as well as they should. If your brake pads are worn out, they should be replaced immediately for your own safety and the safety of others.

5. Timing Belt

The timing belt allows the crankshaft and camshaft to work in unison. The crankshaft cranks the pistons while the camshaft opens and closes the engine valves. Without the timing belt, the pistons would slam into closed valves, causing severe harm to the engine.
