4 Simple Ways to Maintain the Power Steering System

| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

Luckily, the ASE-certified technicians of Christian Brothers Automotive Grayson are available to help you take care of any power steering system problems. By following the four easy steps below, your power steering will always be ready to help you steer.

  1. Monitor the power steering fluid level

The power steering fluid is important to the overall operation of the entire system. The fluid pump produces pressure so the fluid can apply force on the piston. Most power steering issues develop because a leak has formed and the fluid gets low. You may start to notice that the steering wheel has become more difficult to move and begin hearing squealing sounds when turning the wheel.

It’s no laughing matter to be caught on the highway with no power steering. We always suggest checking the fluid level before and after taking a long trip.

  1. Check high and low-pressure hoses for leaks

Two hoses are used to transport the power steering fluid. One hose provides the fluid with high-pressure and the other hose returns it back to the fluid tank with low-pressure. It’s common for leaks to form in the hoses. They should be checked regularly to make sure they don’t rub against one other and any protective coverings are still in place.

  1. Have the filter changed annually

Some driver’s are unaware that a power steering fluid filter even exists. The filter should be changed annually or whenever the owner’s manual suggests. It’s important to always keep the fluid clean and freely flowing to prevent additional wear-and-tear on your pump. You’ll be amazed at how many contaminants find their way into the fluid.

  1. The power steering fluid should be inspected

Keeping the fluid free of contaminants and changing the filter maintains the quality of the fluid and improves its performance. You can determine its quality at home by taking a sample, observing the color and looking out for pieces of metal, dirt or other debris. If the fluid is dark in color, plus has particles and debris floating around, then the fluid needs to be flushed out and replaced.
