5 Auto Terms to Know if You Drive in Memphis

| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

Everyone gets nervous when they have to speak with an auto mechanic. At Christian Brothers Automotive Germantown, located in Memphis, Tennessee, we came up with some common terms you should know.

With this information, you’ll be able to speak the same language at any Memphis auto repair shop. Give these a quick once-over before your next visit so you can show your technician you’re in the know.

1. Dipstick

This metal rod provides technicians a quick way to measure your vehicle’s oil levels. Since there’s some oil residue on the dipstick when they pull it out, they can also look at the quality of your oil.

2. Spark Plug

The spark plug sends a little bit of electricity to ignite a gas and air mixture in order to start your engine. It may be small, but it sure does get your car rolling.

3. [Battery] Corrosion

When your battery starts to corrode, it’s because acid is leaking out. Corrosion will start to block your battery outputs, effectively stopping the flow of electricity. At this point, your battery is dead and the car won’t start.

4. Brake Pad

Brake pads provide friction against your wheels, which will ultimately stop your car. The ASE-certified technician checks to make sure the brake pads are thick enough to safely stop your car. If they are too thin, the professional will suggest a replacement.

5. Timing Belt

The timing belt is the connection between the camshaft and the crankshaft. It ensures these two parts are working together. If the timing belt breaks or slips while you’re driving, the engine could be severely damaged.
